Description

The talk will include some historical notes on development of Radio Astronomy in New Zealand, and a report on a modern status of radio telescopes and major directions of research, as well as Astronomy teaching in New Zealand. New Zealand participation in international collaborations in radio astronomy, as well as in multinational networks of radio telescopes, using VLBI and Space VLBI will be outlined. Our recent results on study of radio recombination lines (RRL) in galactic nebulae will be presented. This study addresses a long time "mystery" -- an old problem of narrowing high-order RRL in radio spectrum of the Orion nebula. We show that the "narrowing" is an apparent effect. Our conclusion is supported by both theoretical modelling and observations. Our observational data allows measuring the large-scale expansion of the Orion nebula, the object in the champagne phase of its evolution.
